Adopting Technology in Reducing Global Warming
Green house emissions is a global menace that has seen world’s nations come together to strategize on ways to reduce the release of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. There has been a lot of concerns in the way industrial revolution has seen a surge in the level of the release of these harmful gases which do not only trap heat hence warming the atmosphere, but also cause massive air pollution which is hazardous to human health.
In bid to reduce the emissions of these gases, there has been the need to employ various technological solutions that seek to curb massive release of the gases. However, as nations come with objectives of a decarbonized world, we all need to realize that it all starts with us as individuals. You need to ask yourself what you are personally doing to support this mission.
Technologies that can Help to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions at Home
Because it the journey to a carbon-free world starts with us, back in 2013, I decided to review how I could help reduce gaseous emissions at home. My first step was getting a home energy audit. I needed to know what changes that would help reduce the heat emitted from my house.
I realized that my house did not receive more of natural light and thus even during the day I was forced to have lights turned on. To counter this, I had the house renovated with large window so that it could receive more of natural light. As for the window panes, I ensured that they were double-paned so that I could reduce the amount of heat lost in my house. This way, I reduced reliance of air conditioners, hence on energy used.
Use of Renewable Energy
Most of the energy used at homes comes from burning fossil fuels such as coal and when burned, these fossil fuels produce massive carbon dioxide and hence contribute largely in global warming and air pollution. However, today technology has provided us with alternative energy that could help in reducing the reliance in energy from fossil fuels. By using renewable energy, we all could have a huge reduction in gaseous emissions.
I decided to buy and install solar panels which could supply the energy needed at home. After auditing the total energy that I needed for home use, I went ahead and purchased solar panels which could substitute the energy that I was using. There are other sources of renewable energy such as wind power, geothermal power and hydro-electric power that if used could help reduce release of harmful gases.
Reducing Use of Electronics
Electronics use a lot of energy and it is vital to reduce your domestic use of these electronics. If you are not using your computer for instance, it is best if you turn it on than leave it running. The same applies to other electronics at home such as TV sets, microwaves and radios. There were times that I left my stereo on the whole day while I was out or at night when I was asleep, but after making my resolutions, I changed from that habit completely. It is always best if you always conserve energy by turning off appliances that are not in use.
Also by replacing regular bulbs with energy saving bulbs, you will be saving the amount of energy used by almost 10 folds which is also a huge step in reducing the use of power in your house; that is exactly what I did. I also installed a programmable thermostat which used Linux hence it could automatically adjust the heat and air conditioning when necessary and this too helped greatly in reducing the amount of energy use
Planting trees and gardening
Although planting of trees and gardening my not involve the use of any technology, it helps in reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the air. Since I reside in the countryside, I saw it vital for me to start an initiative of planting trees. I also encouraged my neighbors to follow suit because I knew that trees would help greatly in having a clean environment.
As for the lawn in my compound which always needed water to keep it green and healthy, I replaced it with an organic garden which has been of much benefit to me. I did purchase the latest technology in irrigation – smart wifi sprinkler control – and this helped in reducing could adjust itself to water my garden when it detected that there was no rain.
There are other initiatives out there and as technology expands in helping us reduce gaseous emissions, we also need to take responsibility and help our nations in doing so. It all starts with us. Be a hero today.
